Activities with toddlers in Berlin: lovely ideas for 0–3 year olds
Exploring Berlin with a toddler? It can be surprisingly relaxed. Between children's farms, parks, playgrounds, family centres, museums and small destinations, there are many places where even the youngest children can experience something new.
Especially with babies and toddlers, it doesn't always have to be a big day-long programme. Watching animals, walking through the woods, playing with water or simply discovering a new playground can already be a real adventure for small children.
Here you'll find ideas for activities with toddlers in Berlin that are well suited to shared family time – outdoors, indoors, free of charge and for rainy days.
1. Visit a children's farm
For many toddlers, animals are among the most exciting destinations of all – and you don't need to leave Berlin for that.
The city has several children's farms and youth farms. There, children can watch goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens and other animals, and sometimes even help care for them. Berlin.de lists children's farms in Görlitzer Park, Pankow, Wedding and Tempelhof, among others, as well as the Domäne Dahlem.
Especially nice for toddlers: you don't need a complicated programme. Simply watching animals, discovering sounds and walking around the grounds can be enough for a morning.
Tip: Check the current opening times before your visit, and which activities are actually suitable for very young children.
2. Discover the Domäne Dahlem
A farm right in the middle of Berlin is a pretty good combination for small children.
The Domäne Dahlem is an organically farmed estate and museum. Alongside farming, there are educational offerings and regular events.
With toddlers in particular, you don't need to turn it into a museum visit. Walking around the grounds, discovering animals and watching what happens on a farm is often completely enough.

3. Go on a playground discovery tour
Instead of always going to the same playground, you can turn it into a little outing.
Berlin has countless playgrounds – from small neighbourhood playgrounds to large adventure playgrounds.
For 1 to 3 year olds, playgrounds with the following are especially interesting:
toddler swings
low slides
sandpits
water play
small climbing elements
A simple idea for the weekend: deliberately pick a playground in a different neighbourhood and combine it with a walk or a picnic.
A family picnic blanket (affiliate link) is handy for a relaxed snack break along the way.
4. Try out a water playground
When it gets warm, you often don't even need a swimming pool with toddlers.
Water playgrounds and splash areas offer plenty of opportunities for mud, pouring, splashing and experimenting.
Pack a change of clothes, a towel and snacks – and a normal playground visit quickly turns into half a day out.
Swim nappies (affiliate link) are practical to bring along for little water lovers.
5. Explore a new park on a balance bike or ride-on car
Berlin has a big advantage for families: a great deal of green space.
Instead of a classic walk, you can bring along a balance bike or ride-on car and explore a park, for example.
It doesn't have to be about covering as much distance as possible. Collecting leaves, watching ducks, climbing over tree trunks or discovering stones is often more interesting to toddlers than the actual destination.
6. Have a woodland day
You don't necessarily need Brandenburg for nature.
There are large wooded areas and natural spaces within Berlin itself too. Turn it into a little discovery tour:
Who can find an especially big stick? Which leaves have different colours? What does moss feel like? What sounds can you hear?
A comfortable baby carrier (affiliate link) keeps even shorter woodland walks relaxed when little legs get tired.
For children between about 2 and 3, this can easily become a simple scavenger-hunt game.
7. Go to FEZ-Berlin
The FEZ-Berlin in Wuhlheide is a children's, youth and family centre with a large outdoor area. Its offerings include family events, theatre, exhibitions, nature activities and various leisure options.
Important for toddlers: check the specific programme and the age recommendation beforehand. Many events are aimed at particular age groups; current FEZ offerings may already be recommended from age 2, for example.

8. Use a library as a destination
Libraries are often underrated as a family outing.
With toddlers, you can look at picture books together, discover new stories and spend a quiet morning – especially handy in the rain or when you deliberately don't want a big programme.
A picture book for babies and toddlers (affiliate link) is a lovely match for this at home.
Many Berlin libraries also offer events for children and families.
And best of all: a library visit doesn't have to cost money every time.
9. Take a little BVG adventure tour
What is simply public transport for adults can be a highlight for two year olds.
Riding the bus. Watching the tram. Sitting upstairs on the double-decker. Taking the S-Bahn and looking out of the window at what's happening outside.
You don't even need a special destination for this.
Pick an interesting route, get off somewhere, discover a playground or park, and then ride back again.
10. Explore Tempelhof airfield on a balance bike
Tempelhofer Feld offers plenty of space to move around.
For small children, the huge open space alone can be exciting. Bring along a balance bike, watch planes in the sky, have a picnic and simply run around in between.
This works especially well on days when you don't want a tightly scheduled family outing.
11. Go to a weekly market together
Even everyday places can be exciting for toddlers.
Discovering colours, choosing fruit, looking at flowers or buying a bread roll together: a market visit offers plenty of small impressions.
Let your child pick three apples themselves, for example, or choose a type of fruit that you then try together.
12. Collect natural materials and craft with them afterwards
This activity combines an outing with an activity at home.
Collect on a walk:
Leaves, small branches, chestnuts, stones or other fallen natural materials.
At home you can use them to make pictures, glue on leaves or paint stones.
A creative craft set (affiliate link) also provides age-appropriate ideas for shared craft time.
With very young children, of course, make sure nothing swallowable ends up unsupervised in their mouths.
13. Visit a children's museum when it rains
From around age three, Berlin's children's museums also become increasingly interesting.
The Labyrinth Kindermuseum in Wedding focuses on interactive exhibitions where children can try things out and discover for themselves. The current hands-on exhibition is aimed at children aged 3 to 11.
The MACHmit! Museum in Prenzlauer Berg also offers children opportunities to explore, move and create.
For a one-year-old, on the other hand, I wouldn't automatically recommend a museum visit like this. Pay attention to the relevant age recommendation.
14. Discover ANOHA from around age 3
A special indoor destination is ANOHA – the children's world of the Jewish Museum Berlin.
The children's world is officially aimed at 3 to 10 year olds. In the large ark, children can playfully discover and try things out. Among other things, there's a 14-metre-long water test track for boats.
This visit is therefore especially suited to families whose toddler is heading towards kindergarten age.

15. Simply discover a new neighbourhood
Not every family outing needs tickets or a fixed destination.
Take a neighbourhood you don't normally spend time in and turn it into a little day of discovery:
Playground → walk → snack → park → home.
Especially with small children, a flexible outing can be more pleasant than a place you have to be at a certain time.
Free activities with toddlers in Berlin
Many of the loveliest ideas cost little or nothing at all. Playgrounds, parks, walks, woodland days, Tempelhofer Feld or little discovery tours through a new neighbourhood also work on a small budget.
This is an advantage especially with toddlers: a two year old doesn't need a big attraction every week. Often movement, nature and the chance to discover something themselves are completely enough.

What can you do with a 1-year-old in Berlin?
With a one-year-old, I would mainly choose activities that let you stay flexible: children's farms, parks, playgrounds with a toddler area, libraries, walks and short nature outings.
That way you can respond to hunger, tiredness or a sudden change of mood at any time.
What can you do with a 2-year-old in Berlin?
At two, water playgrounds, balance-bike tours, animals, bigger playgrounds and simple hands-on activities become increasingly interesting.
A bus, tram or S-Bahn ride can already be part of the outing too.
What can you do with a 3-year-old in Berlin?
From age three, the choice grows considerably. In addition to parks, playgrounds and animal encounters, the first children's museums, theatre offerings, workshops and other events come into play.
ANOHA and the current exhibition at the Labyrinth Kindermuseum, for example, are explicitly aimed at children from age three.
