The loveliest libraries for children in Berlin

Libraries with kids? Absolutely. Many children's libraries in Berlin have long been more than places where you just borrow books. There are cosy children's areas, picture books, Tonies and games, but also story times, workshops, gaming, makerspaces and other free events.
Especially for rainy days, quiet afternoons or a spontaneous outing without a big budget, libraries are a great choice for families.
We'll show you some of the loveliest and most interesting libraries for children in Berlin – spread across different districts.
1. Philipp-Schaeffer-Bibliothek – Mitte
📍 Brunnenstraße 181, 10119 Berlin
The Philipp-Schaeffer-Bibliothek has its own children's library and offers various programmes for children, nurseries and schools.
The regular story-time sessions are especially interesting. During the school term, for example, there is story time in German and, on selected dates, also in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian.

Homework and learning support is also offered for primary school children on several days.

2. Familienbibliothek Else Ury – Kreuzberg
📍 Glogauer Straße 13, 10999 Berlin
The name gives it away: the Else Ury is explicitly designed as a family library.
It's currently housed as the Pop-Up Else on Glogauer Straße while work is carried out on the original building. There you'll find books, films and games, as well as regular events and projects for families.
And the programme is unusually varied.
There are, for example, family games afternoons, gaming activities and storytelling hours. At the games afternoon, children from age three can try out various games together with parents, grandparents or friends. The gaming afternoons feature robots and a PlayStation 5, among other things.

3. Bezirkszentralbibliothek Pablo Neruda – Friedrichshain
📍 Frankfurter Allee 14A, 10247 Berlin
The Pablo Neruda library is one of the large libraries in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and an interesting address for families from Friedrichshain.
Alongside media and activities for children, one practical advantage is its unusually good availability: the library is currently even open on Sundays, though part of the opening hours are self-service only.
That makes it especially interesting for families spontaneously looking for a free indoor activity in Berlin at the weekend.

4. Janusz-Korczak-Bibliothek – Pankow
📍 Berliner Straße 120–121, 13187 Berlin
If you live in Pankow, the Janusz-Korczak-Bibliothek should be on your radar.
It belongs to the Stadtbibliothek Pankow and offers family-friendly opening hours. Especially handy: as things currently stand, the library can also be used on Saturdays and Sundays; at certain times, however, without the regular service.
That makes it a good, uncomplicated destination when the weather rules out a playground visit, or when you simply want a quieter family afternoon.

5. Mittelpunktbibliothek Köpenick “Alter Markt”
📍 Alter Markt 2, 12555 Berlin
The Mittelpunktbibliothek Köpenick also has its own children's and youth area as well as events and free activities.
Especially interesting for a family outing: since June 2026, the library has also been open on Sundays. Alongside reading and borrowing, the library explicitly names playing and social exchange as options during Sunday opening.
This can also be nicely combined with a walk through Köpenick's old town.

6. Mittelpunktbibliothek Alte Feuerwache – Treptow
📍 near Schöneweide S-Bahn station
Even the building makes this library a little different: a former fire station has been integrated into today's Mittelpunktbibliothek.
Across roughly 1,500 square metres, there are around 75,000 items and various activities. The library also has its own event area specifically for children.

Good for: families from Treptow, Schöneweide and the surrounding area.
Libraries are more than books

A library visit is worthwhile even with very young children.

Are libraries in Berlin free?
Spending time in public libraries and many events can be free of charge. Certain services and regular media lending are subject to the terms of the Verbund der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken Berlins (association of Berlin's public libraries).
With events, it's always worth checking the details: some can be attended spontaneously, while others require registration.
Especially free story times, games sessions and workshops make libraries an interesting address for families who want to explore Berlin without spending a lot of money every weekend.
Libraries as a bad-weather activity
It's raining outside and the walls at home feel like they're closing in?
Then I would definitely consider a library as an alternative to the typical indoor playgrounds and museums.
The advantage:
You often don't have to turn it into a whole day out.
An hour of looking at picture books, trying out a game together and then perhaps having a hot chocolate afterwards can be completely enough for a grey afternoon.
That's exactly why libraries also work well as a spontaneous indoor activity with kids in Berlin.
